Ingredients

2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

1 large egg

¾ cup sour cream

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Optional: 1 teaspoon cinnamon or ½ teaspoon nutmeg or 1 tablespoon lemon zest

Instructions

1. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

2. Add egg, sour cream, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.

3. Whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl.

4. Gradually combine dry ingredients with wet until a soft dough forms.

5. Chill dough for 30 minutes (optional).

6. Preheat oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment.

7. Drop spoonfuls of dough or roll and cut into shapes.

8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, just until edges begin to brown.

9. Cool on wire rack and serve plain or frosted.

Notes

Chilling the dough helps with shape and flavor.

Full-fat sour cream works best.
